What Is Topical Authority?

Topical authority is a site's standing on a topic, as a search engine judges it. The standing comes from historical data times topical coverage, divided by the cost of retrieval, and multiplied by the right visual annotations.

The four factors. The formula is Koray Tuğberk Gübür's, in its current form. Coverage is the one most sites work on. The other three decide if the coverage counts.

What is the topical authority formula?

The topical authority formula multiplies historical data by topical coverage, divides by cost of retrieval, and multiplies the result by visual annotations.

The formula is Koray Tuğberk Gübür's, in the form published in his July 2026 article on Search Engine Land. Topical authority is a product, not a sum. A factor near zero pulls the whole result toward zero, however strong the others are. Deep coverage on a broken layout scores low for exactly that reason.

The formula works best as a diagnosis. Each factor points at a different fix: history at clicks over time, coverage at the map, cost at pages and templates, annotations at layout. A site that publishes heavily and still stalls usually has coverage to spare and a fault in one of the other three. Reading the formula factor by factor names that fault.

Cost of retrieval is the compute a search engine spends to crawl, render, and evaluate the site. The two multipliers reward what the site has earned and what it covers. The visual multiplier checks that each page declares its function. The divisor charges for every page, script, and duplicate the engine processes on the way.

What do the four factors of topical authority measure?

Each factor measures one thing: earned history, answered scope, understanding cost, and declared function.

Historical data is what the site has earned: satisfied clicks over time on the topic's queries. A new site has none, which is why the first clicks matter more than the hundredth. Pandu Nayak's testimony in the DOJ trial notes that many documents have no clicks. Those documents are ranked on core topicality signals first.

Topical coverage is how much of the topic the site answers: every entity in the class, every attribute, every query template variation. Coverage without a page decision per node is a pile of pages. The topical map is where each of those decisions is recorded. A node is one row of that map: an entity, its attributes, its predicate, and its query network. A node without a page decision is a guess, not a plan.

Visual annotations measure if each page's layout declares its function. A page whose main component is wrong multiplies the other three factors by a number near zero. The annotation is read per page, and one template carries it across every URL built on that template. Visual semantics covers how that annotation is read.

How is topical authority built with entity classes and query templates?

Topical authority is built by two methodologies, and the strongest sites use both.

The first methodology covers every entity of a class through its shared attributes. Every condition has symptoms, causes, and treatments. Every product has a price, a material, and a size. Covering all members of the class through the same attributes signals coverage of the whole topic.

The second methodology covers every variation of a query template. 'How to [task]' runs across many tasks, and '[Service] in [city]' runs across many cities. Authority attaches to the format, and the variations need not be topically related to each other. A Google patent on query suggestion templates swaps the entity in grouped past queries for a placeholder such as [city]. Both methodologies are described in Gübür's query templates article.

The hybrid covers all entities, all attributes, and all template variations. Outer pages answer informational queries and pass signals inward through canonical anchors. Core pages hold the commercial intents. The topical map is the plan that orders all three. Each outer page links to its core page with one canonical anchor.

How is topical authority lost?

Topical authority behaves like a decision tree that rejects a site at the first failed branch.

Two pages for one query split the click history between them, and each page holds half of what one page earns. Google's ranking systems guide states that deduplication shows only the most relevant of very similar pages. A vocabulary that drifts across pages reads as several sources instead of one. Publishing off-topic content spends the trust earned on-topic.

A template change that moves the main component below a carousel changes the visual annotation on every page at once. Each of these failures lowers the product. Some set one factor near zero. Recovery starts with the factor at zero, not with more coverage.

Vocabulary drift is the quiet version of the same failure. One page calls the service a content audit, the next calls it an SEO review, and a third calls it a site health check. A reader sees one business. A search engine sees three weakly connected entities, each holding a third of the coverage.

How is topical authority measured in Search Console?

Topical authority is read in Search Console, per template, over months.

Query count per page type is the leading indicator. A category page that ranks for forty queries this month and ninety next month is gaining coverage the engine recognizes. Impressions rise before clicks. Clicks rise before CTR settles.

A site gaining authority often shows falling average CTR while clicks climb. The cause is new visibility: the site starts appearing for thousands of new queries at low positions. Clicks and query count are read together, never CTR alone. Positions ten to thirty are where new coverage shows up first.

Reports group pages by template, not by URL. A layout change or a vocabulary fix lands on a template, so the template is the unit that moves. Page-level reports hide the pattern inside noise. A template that gains queries while its siblings stall shows which layout works. The comparison between templates is the most useful view in the report.

Questions about what is topical authority

Does publishing more pages build topical authority?
Only pages that pass the page test. A page without demand, a distinct entity, low similarity to its neighbors, or a pattern raises the cost of retrieval and adds no coverage. More pages that fail the test lower authority.
How long does topical authority take to build?
The roadmap is twelve months because authority compounds across core updates. The first clicks on the outer section come within the first crawl cycles. The core pages move once the outer section has passed signals inward.
Can a small site have topical authority?
Yes, on a small topic. A site that covers every attribute of one entity class with clean layout has authority on that class. The class next to it gains nothing from that.
Do backlinks build topical authority?
Aligned links contribute to historical data and to trust. Google's generative search filing names inbound links as a trust input. Unaligned links contribute a vote from a page about something else. The Authority Signals service places only the first kind.
Is topical authority a Google ranking factor?
No. Topical authority is not a named system in Google's ranking systems guide. The term models how named systems, from neural matching to site-wide classifiers, treat a site that covers a topic consistently at low cost.
What is the relationship between topical authority and a topical map?
The map is the coverage plan. Authority is what the site earns when the map is executed in order with the right layout and the click history accumulates.
Can topical authority transfer to a new topic?
Partly, through the site-wide signals Google states contribute to page understanding. A site with authority on physiotherapy does not inherit authority on nutrition. What carries over is a faster first evaluation.
Do subdomains share topical authority with the root domain?
Generally, yes. Google's ranking systems guide states that subdomains are generally treated as the same site as the root. A blog on a subdomain builds on the root's standing and shares its risks.
Does an exact-match domain build topical authority faster?
No. Google runs a system that limits credit for domains built to match queries. A matching site name helps connect the brand to its queries. The domain alone is not a strategy.
Do SEO tool authority scores measure topical authority?
No. Third-party authority scores estimate link popularity across a whole domain. They read no coverage, no layout, and no click history on a topic. Treat them as a link metric, not a topical one.
Is topical authority judged per page or per site?
Both. Google's ranking systems guide states that ranking works at page level, with site-wide signals and classifiers also contributing. Good site-wide signals do not lift every page, and poor ones do not sink every page. Topical authority describes the site-wide part on one topic.
